For most of Dirk Nannes' adult life, cricket has been an afterthought. He used to play a couple of club games at the start of the season, a handful at the end, and in between travel the world pursuing his other passion, skiing. He was no run-of-the-mill ski bum - he competed for several years in World Cup skiing events and narrowly missed selection for the Australian Winter Olympics team in the late 1990s. But when he started to take his cricket seriously, he quickly grabbed the attention of Victoria's selectors. It led to a first-class debut at 29 in 2005-06, and in his second game he suffered the group humiliation of watching Queensland storm to 6 for 900 declared in the Pura Cup final.

A persistent shoulder injury picked up during a stint in English club cricket limited him to one match the following summer, but in 2007-08 Nannes enjoyed his most productive season. A genuinely quick left-arm bowler who can swing the ball late, Nannes collected 22 Pura Cup wickets at 28.54, although he was again part of a demoralised, unsuccessful Victoria side in the decider. There was more joy in the Twenty20, where he was instrumental in the Bushrangers winning the title. Nannes destroyed Western Australia with 4 for 23 in the final, and his promising FR Cup season - 11 wickets at 20.54 - hinted that he would be a big part of Victoria's attack moving forward. Anything but a typical fast bowler, Nannes speaks Japanese, studied the saxophone at university and runs a successful ski-travel company. A self-confessed "accidental cricketer", he is also the son of Dutch migrant parents and his Netherlands passport allowed him to play for Middlesex in 2008 as a non-overseas player.

Dirk Nannes (born 16 May 1976) is a Dutch Australian cricketer who is a member of the Netherlands cricket team, the Victorian Bushrangers and the Delhi Daredevils in the Indian Premier League. A left-arm fast bowler, he plays for Fitzroy-Doncaster in Victorian club cricket.
In his second first-class cricket game he played in the 2005/06 Pura Cup final in which the Queensland Bulls amassed a record 6 for 900 declared. Nannes took three wickets in the innings and when it came Victoria's time to bat he was the last wicket to fall in the match.
He signed for Middlesex CCC during the 2008 English Domestic season, qualifying as a non-overseas player due to his Dutch passport. Nannes struggled with injury the 2008 season however he was a member of Middlesex's Twenty20 triumph, and took 20 wickets at 19, including a haul of 6/32 in the county championship.
In the 2008 Sheffield Shield, Nannes took his career best figures of 7/50. In his first innings against Western Australia in Perth, he produced highly unusual figures of 1/2 off 0.1 overs, bowling a wicket then two beamers in succession and being banned from bowling for the remainder of the innings.
On Wednesday 10 December 2008 it was announced that Nannes was selected for the Netherlands cricket squad to play the ICC Trophy in South Africa.[3] However Nannes subsequently signed with the Delhi Daredevils for the 2009 IPL season, which was to be played in April at the same time as the ICC Trophy causing him to withdraw from The Netherlands' squad.
Victoria & Delhi Daredevils coach Greg Shipperd, when asked about Dirk's non selection for the Australian Twenty20 team, said that "I would have thought he would be first pick". Following this latest omission from the Australian team, Nannes has now confirmed his allegiance to the land of his parent's home country. He made his international debut for The Netherlands in the first match of the 2009 ICC World Twenty20, opening the bowling in their surprise win over England.

    Personal life

Nannes is a former mogul ski racer who has competed at Alpine skiing World Cup events, and off the cricket field, is the director and founder of 'Global Snow Tours'[8], an independent snow tour operator. He studied the saxophone at university.[9] He was educated at Wesley College, Melbourne. Though it is often claimed that Nannes speaks Japanese, in an interview with the BBC, Nannes refuted this.
